Archivist's Note

I wanted this piece to carry the weight of a confession shared in a room too old for comfort. Thalos gives shape to the horror, but he also gives it grief, and that grief is what makes the hunt feel personal. This is where Gideon stops chasing rumor and begins walking toward something far more intimate, cruel, and unforgettable.

Three Years Ago...

In the stillness of his dream, Gideon could feel the flickering of time—a sensation that blurred the boundaries between reality and memory. The warm glow of the candlelight in the grand estate illuminated his weathered face. He sat in the older man’s study, a place shrouded in the kind of darkness that weighed heavily on the soul.

Outside, the rain tapped softly against the window panes, a haunting rhythm that seemed to mirror the unspoken horrors of Hollow’s Rest.

The older man, Thalos Greer, took another deep draw from his Murktail pipe, the faintly glowing ember at its tip casting eerie shadows across his craggy features. His voice was hoarse yet commanding, like a wind that refused to yield to the storm. Gideon sat silently, his silver sword resting against the side of his chair, its freshly polished edge glinting faintly in the candlelight.

"You’ve heard the whispers by now," Thalos began, his gaze fixed on the flame dancing in the ornate candle holder before him. "The villagers might have told you bits and pieces—half-truths, rumors. But I’ll give you the full tale."

Gideon leaned forward, his lantern emitting a faint, ghostly hum that seemed to mingle with the room’s stillness. "Start from the beginning," he said, his voice steady.

Thalos nodded, exhaling a plume of smoke that twisted and writhed in the dim light. "They call them Whisperkin. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the name doesn’t do justice to the nightmares they bring."

He paused, the lines of his face deepening as his memories seemed to claw their way back into the present. "They aren’t demons, though they’re just as vile. No, they’re something older, something primal. Creatures that lived deep underground in the Mirebound Fen long before the Dominion’s founding. The Blight drove them to the surface, forced them out of their nests of filth and rot. They’ve adapted, you see—learned how to hunt us in ways that make the skin crawl… sometimes literally."

Thalos took another drag, his hands trembling slightly. "They wear their prey, Gideon. Skin, faces, even voices—they take them all. They mimic children most often. There’s nothing more disarming than a lost little one calling out in the dark. But what answers is no child. And by the time you realize, it’s already too late."

The words hung in the air like a curse. Gideon’s grip on the armrest tightened, his jaw set. "And the victims?"

Thalos’ expression darkened. "We’ve found them, or what’s left of them. Hollowed-out bodies, skinless and twisted like discarded rags. Some are missing faces. Others… well, they’re missing everything. It’s not just death, soul hunter—it’s erasure. Twenty children gone in the past year alone. Some say they’ve seen their children’s faces stitched onto the shadows that wander the woods at night."

The old man’s voice cracked, and he quickly took another drag of his pipe to steady himself. "My own grandchild," he said, barely above a whisper. "She was six. Bright-eyed, full of life. She went missing one night while playing by the creek. We found her shoe a mile out, but nothing else."

The room fell silent. Thalos’ grief was palpable, a heavy fog that neither time nor drink could disperse. Gideon let the moment pass, his own sorrow rising unbidden as he thought of the faces he’d seen—faces he could never forget.

"Most of the tracks lead to the Mirebound Fen," Thalos continued, his voice hardening. "A wretched bogland to the northwest. It’s a place of death and decay, shrouded in mist and misery. The waterways run red with the Blight, and the land itself seems alive, hungry to swallow the unwary."

Thalos leaned forward, his eyes locking onto Gideon’s. "The Whisperkin nest there, among the gnarled trees and rotting ruins. But they don’t just hide. They hunt. The tracks we’ve found are… unnatural. Feet that twist the wrong way, claws where there should be toes. And always, they lead back to the Fen."

"Why hasn’t anyone tried to burn it out?" Gideon asked, his tone sharp.

Thalos gave a bitter laugh. "Do you think we haven’t tried? The Fen is a graveyard of would-be heroes. Those who enter seldom return. And those who do…" He trailed off, his gaze distant. "They aren’t the same. They speak of whispers in the mist, of faces staring at them from the murk. They never last long after that. Either they disappear, or they take their own lives."

The candle on the table flickered violently, as if reacting to the weight of Thalos’ words. Shadows seemed to stretch and twist along the walls, a subtle reminder of the darkness waiting just beyond the safety of the estate. Gideon’s lantern let out a faint hum, its light flickering as if in response.

Thalos noticed and chuckled grimly. "That lantern of yours has a life of its own."

Gideon gave a faint smile. "Usually only when it senses darkness nearby."

The old man’s face grew grave. "Well then, you’d best trust it. You’ll need every advantage you can get."

Thalos gestured to the silver sword now resting in Gideon’s lap. "That blade isn’t ordinary. It’s called Sorrowbane. Forged by Eshar himself, inscribed with runes that bind its edge to the essence of the darkness. My father spared no expense to bring it here, though he never imagined it would be needed."

Gideon ran his fingers along the runes, feeling the faint hum of power beneath his touch. "Sorrowbane," he murmured, the name resonating with an eerie weight.

Thalos nodded. "If you slay that wretched thing, the sword is yours."

Gideon rose from his chair, the sword gleaming in the dim light. "I’ll see to it," he said, his voice steady despite the unease gnawing at him. He sheathed the blade and turned toward the door.

As he reached the threshold, Thalos called out. "Hunter."

Gideon paused, looking back.

"Bring those children some peace," the old man said, his voice heavy with both hope and despair.

Gideon nodded, his expression grim. "I will."

The rain had slowed to a drizzle as Gideon stepped out into the night. The air was thick with the scent of wet soil and decay, a reminder of the darkness that awaited him. He took a deep breath, exhaling a plume of fog into the cold air.

"I should’ve had that ale," he muttered, adjusting his cloak and hat as he began his trek through the mud.

The village was quiet, save for the occasional creak of wood or the distant call of a Nyctharis bird. Its mournful cry echoed through the mist, a sound that felt more like a warning than a song.

Gideon made his way to the local alchemical shop, his mind already racing through the preparations he would need for the hunt. The weight of the task ahead pressed heavily on his shoulders, but he pressed on. The Whisperkin were waiting, and he would face them head-on.

The dream faded into the fog as Gideon’s steps carried him toward the darkness.
