Tainted Ashen
The Tainted Ashen are the desecrated remains of fallen Ashen Hunters, warriors whose pursuit of the Crucible of Fate ended in a damnation even death could not release. Beneath their rotting armor, cursed souls writhe against withered flesh, their red and amber eyes burning with the last corruption of forgotten oaths. They still hunt with the dreadful discipline of their former lives, stalking the ruined passages of Astryon in packs, their broken weapons raised against the living they once swore to protect.

Ashen Hunter Remnant, Curse-Bound Martial Undead, Sealed Restless Dead Record
Known Location
The Tainted Ashen are most frequently encountered among the ruined approaches of the Shattered Crest, where ancient Ashen Hunter expeditions ended in slaughter and their remains were left beyond the reach of burial rites. Smaller concentrations haunt collapsed fortifications, abandoned military passages, and the forgotten killing grounds of the Shattered Dominion. They favor places where their former campaigns ended violently, continuing to patrol broken roads and guard thresholds long after the purpose of their final orders has been lost.
Known Condition
Reanimated, curse-bound, and irreversibly corrupted. The Tainted Ashen remain trapped within the decaying bodies of the warriors they once were, their flesh deteriorating while the malediction preserves their strength, predatory senses, and fragments of martial discipline. Their former identities have largely dissolved, though certain specimens still recognize weapons, formations, and places associated with their deaths. They cannot be restored through ordinary healing or burial rites; only the severance of the curse binding soul to corpse offers a lasting end to their suffering.
Associated Factions
The Restless Dead constitute their present classification, though the Tainted Ashen retain a direct historical connection to the ancient Ashen Hunters, whose fallen ranks supplied the first known victims of this corruption. They possess no surviving allegiance to the hunters' original cause, yet their coordinated movements suggest remnants of the discipline once imposed upon them. The Silent Veil maintains a hostile association with these creatures, regarding them as particularly grievous cases of failed soul-passage, requiring containment, spiritual severance, or destruction before their numbers gather beyond control.
Associated Faith
The Ashen Rite of Restoration, particularly the ancient Vigil of the Unburied, a funerary observance once practiced among the Ashen Hunters. Before a fallen warrior was committed to the pyre, their name, deeds, and final command were spoken aloud; the command was then formally released, lest duty follow the soul beyond death. The Tainted Ashen represent a particularly dreadful violation of this belief. Their bodies have outlived their vows, their souls remain imprisoned within the ruins of their former flesh, and whatever curse sustains them has preserved the discipline of the hunt while destroying the purpose that once made it honorable. To the surviving Ashen faithful, these creatures are not objects of worship, but evidence of a sacred obligation left unfinished.
Related Figures
Rael the Unbroken remains the great historical figure associated with the Ashen Hunters' earliest struggles, although no surviving account directly implicates him in the creation of the Tainted Ashen. More obscure is Marshal Corven Veyr, an Ashen commander whose company reportedly disappeared during a campaign through the Shattered Crest. Later accounts describe armored corpses still holding the approaches to his abandoned encampment, attacking travelers with the discipline of soldiers defending a position they no longer understand. Sister Maerith Voss, an Ashen funerary chronicler, is remembered for compiling the Register of the Unreturned, a mortuary record containing the names of warriors whose remains could not be recovered or properly consecrated. Her final surviving entry describes bodies found standing in formation beneath a collapsed watchtower, their weapons raised toward an enemy who had been dead for generations. The High Reaper of the Silent Veil remains among the few living authorities believed capable of distinguishing the individual souls imprisoned within such creatures from the ancient malediction that compels their movements.
Threat Level
Severe / Ashen Malediction — Coordinated Undead Host The Tainted Ashen are especially dangerous in numbers, where the remnants of their former military discipline turn a mindless-looking assault into something disturbingly deliberate. They advance through ruined fortifications, surround isolated travelers, and pursue the living long after exhaustion should have ended their movements. Their decaying bodies can be broken by steel, yet the curse binding soul to flesh may endure unless severed through consecrated light or death-rites. Veil Archive Warning: The greatest danger lies in the possibility that some Tainted Ashen retain fragments of their final orders. Entire companies have reportedly been encountered guarding battlefields abandoned centuries ago, still killing for commanders whose names have vanished from history. Should their malediction spread among the unburied Ashen dead, the Shattered Dominion may face something considerably worse than wandering corpses: the remains of an ancient army, deprived of conscience but not of its ability to wage war.
