The Prophecy of Greyspire

Discovered · 1st of Grimthorn, Year of the Astral Unraveling

Archivist's Note

I wanted this chapter to introduce Aelith with a sense of quiet tragedy before the larger violence arrives. She is not simply “the princess of Greyspire” — she is a young woman born into royalty but raised inside fear, prophecy, and isolation, loved by her parents yet treated by the wider world as something dangerous. What matters most to me here is that her gift is not presented as a glamorous power; it costs her peace, childhood, and belonging. This is the beginning of the wound that shapes her, and it shows why Aelith’s story is so important to Shadows of the Crucible: she sees the fire before anyone believes it can come, and still she is powerless to stop the world from burning.

9 Years Before Current Day – Greyspire, East Harrowfell

The Kingdom of Greyspire was a name once spoken with reverence across the Shattered Dominion. Situated deep within the northern mountains, Greyspire was known for its rich veins of ore and its unyielding strength, both in resources and in leadership. For centuries, the kingdom had supplied Alyndor and its neighboring cities with iron, silver, and countless other materials used to fuel empires, wars, and the ambitions of kings. But its heart was not in its mines or its riches; it was in the royal bloodline that had ruled for generations—a line that held a secret far more powerful than any ore the kingdom could provide.

The youngest of that bloodline was the Princess of Greyspire, Aelith, a name whispered both in reverence and fear. From the moment of her birth, Aelith was seen as different. Her striking appearance—a pale complexion and jet-black hair, even as a child—had set her apart from her family. But it was her ability to see what others could not that truly marked her as unique. Her visions came in the form of vivid dreams, dreams that foretold events with startling accuracy. In the early years, her father, King Orwin Greyspire, had tried to dismiss these dreams, hoping they were the imagination of a young girl. But as her visions became prophecies, he could no longer ignore what she truly was—a seer, much like the dreaded sages of old.

The Sages, as mentioned in ancient texts, were once revered in the lands surrounding Alyndor. Twisted and deformed, they lived in isolated mausoleums, grotesque and feared by the people. They had the gift of prophecy, but their words were often cursed with dark omens, bringing fear and suffering to those who dared to listen. Over time, the sages had faded into obscurity, their once-valuable prophecies reduced to eerie tales. But Aelith’s abilities were undeniable, even more potent than the sages of old. She could foretell the future, and what she saw often brought despair rather than hope.

From a young age, Aelith was kept away from the public eye, hidden in the grand halls of the royal palace, her abilities treated like a curse rather than a blessing. King Orwin feared what her powers could bring—attention, corruption, and enemies from within and beyond their borders. His concerns were justified. Whispers began to spread throughout the kingdom about the strange child born into the royal family, a girl whose sight could pierce the future itself. The nobility whispered of demons, of cursed bloodlines, and of a doom that might fall upon Greyspire if the child were allowed to live freely.

Aelith’s childhood was one of isolation. The court treated her like a living relic, someone to be feared rather than loved. The people, once loyal to the Greyspire name, began to turn their backs on her, seeing her as an ill omen. The priests of the Astral Tree had once believed Greyspire to be blessed by the gods, but now they whispered that Aelith’s existence was a stain upon the kingdom. Her dreams, filled with death, decay, and ruin, only furthered these fears.

Her father, the King, did all he could to protect her, forbidding outsiders from visiting the palace and surrounding her with only the most loyal guards and courtiers. Her mother, Queen Elowen, adored Aelith but lived in constant fear for her safety, knowing that powerful enemies were eager to use or destroy the princess for their own ends. Despite the love of her parents, Aelith’s life was defined by loneliness, haunted by visions that she could not control.

At the age of fifteen, Aelith began to see a vision that would plague her dreams for years to come—a vision of Greyspire in flames, its grand halls reduced to rubble, its people slaughtered mercilessly. In these dreams, she saw not only the fall of her kingdom but the rise of a shadowy force, led by a figure draped in darkness and wielding an insidious power. Time and time again, she would wake in terror, her cries echoing through the stone corridors of the palace. She warned her father of what she saw, but even he, fearing the future she predicted, struggled to believe that such a disaster could befall their great kingdom.

Years passed, and Aelith's warnings went largely unheeded by the court. Although her prophecies had come true in small ways before—droughts, famines, minor skirmishes—none could believe that Greyspire, the mighty kingdom of the mountains, could ever fall. The nobles scoffed, seeing her visions as the ramblings of a cursed child, and even her father, though he loved her dearly, had begun to doubt her.

As Aelith grew older, the burden of her abilities weighed heavily on her soul. She felt the distance between herself and the people of Greyspire, her status as both a royal and a seer isolating her further. The villagers spoke of her as a freak, a cursed child who could bring only doom. Children whispered rumors of her being a demon in disguise, while the elders warned their kin not to cross her path. Though a select few still came to her for guidance, most feared what her visions would reveal. Aelith learned to steel herself against these rumors, but the truth was that she longed for a normal life, one free of the visions that haunted her.

It was not long before word of her powers reached the ears of neighboring kingdoms. Envoys and petitioners began to visit Greyspire, seeking counsel from the young princess, desperate for prophecies that might avert disaster or bring them fortune. Each request weighed on Aelith more heavily than the last. She would sit for hours, gazing into the flame of a single candle, her mind wandering far from the present into the dark recesses of the future. What she saw in those moments was often bleak, filled with images of death and sorrow that would drive even the strongest to despair. Yet she endured, helping as many as she could, hoping to bring peace to those who sought her.

But her abilities came at a cost, draining her spirit in ways that no one understood. The prophecies took more from her than just her energy; they gnawed at her very soul, leaving her pale and weak. Each vision became more intense than the last, as though the weight of the future was collapsing upon her, piece by piece. Her father, though reluctant, soon became aware of the toll this was taking on his daughter, and he doubled his efforts to keep her abilities secret.

Valen, then a commander of the Dusk Knights, learned of Aelith’s gift through a network of spies. Known for his ruthless ambition, he sought her out, not for her prophecies, but to use her abilities as a weapon for his growing empire. He saw in her the key to controlling the future, a way to foresee every move his enemies might make and ensure that the Serpent’s Fang would rule the Shattered Dominion uncontested.

Valen launched an all-out assault on Greyspire, with an army that descended upon the kingdom with terrifying precision. Aelith’s nightmares had prepared her for this, but no amount of prophecy could have braced her for the true horror of watching her home burn. The once-proud spires of Greyspire crumbled under Valen’s siege, and its streets ran red with blood as the Dusk Knights tore through the city’s defenses.

The people of Greyspire fought bravely, but they were no match for Valen’s forces. Queen Elowen was captured, her final moments spent pleading for her daughter’s life before she, too, was slain. The royal family was wiped out in one brutal stroke, leaving only Aelith to face the carnage.
