The Lanterns of Arawn
A monumental relic-lore account of the Lanterns of Arawn—cold-flamed prisons forged beneath Umbral Keep to bind the restless dead, preserve Astryon’s fragile balance, and burden Gideon Thorne with the terrible question of whether mercy can remain mercy when shaped into a cage.

Archive Classification
Relic Codex / Veil-Bound Artifacts / Soul-Containment Instruments of the Silent Veil
Known Location
Primarily housed within Umbral Keep, especially the Shadowforge, the Sanctum of Black Flame, and the Catacombs of Eternal Silence. The Prime Lantern is currently carried by Gideon Thorne, while lesser Lanterns remain in the hands of surviving Soul Hunters or sealed in hidden vaults beneath the Keep.
Known Condition
Active but spiritually burdened; many Lanterns remain functional, though aged, warped, and heavily reinforced by centuries of soul-containment. The Prime Lantern is the most stable and most dangerous, its cold flame still burning with Arawn’s severed soul and the unrest of the dead bound within.
Associated Factions
The Lanterns are bound foremost to the Silent Veil, whose Soul Hunters wield them as instruments of spirit-binding, judgment, and containment. They are also spiritually tied to Arawn, the Prime Lantern, Umbral Keep, the rites of the Shadowforge, and the lingering threat of the Forgotten God of Death, whose stolen laws still echo within their making.
Associated Faith
The Lanterns are not bound to any public temple, but to the forbidden death-rites of the Silent Veil: a veiled doctrine of balance, soul-containment, grave-silence, and passage between the living and the dead. Their existence stands adjacent to the Astral Faith, yet apart from it, rooted in older laws of death, Veil communion, and Arawn’s stolen covenant with the Forgotten God.
Related Figures
Arawn, founder of the Silent Veil and creator of the Prime Lantern; Gideon Thorne, current bearer of the Prime Lantern and last Warden of its burden; Eldred Morvayn, High Reaper and keeper of the Sanctum of Black Flame; Elara Thorne, whose Aeternum Stone shields Gideon from spiritual collapse; the Forgotten God of Death, whose ancient laws were deceived and woven into the Lanterns’ making; and the countless Soul Hunters whose lives were slowly consumed by the relics they carried.
Threat Level
Cataclysmic / Sacred Hazard — The Lanterns are not inherently evil, but each is a living prison of unstable soul-force capable of binding, warping, or overwhelming both the dead and the bearer. In disciplined hands, they preserve the balance of Astryon; in broken hands, or if one were to fracture, they could unleash centuries of imprisoned grief, corruption, and spiritual ruin upon the living realm.
